Ontario’s Long-Term Care Minister Merilee Fullerton said Monday that she ultimately accepts responsibility for the well-being of the residents and staff in long-term care, as the facilities were ravaged by COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic.

However, the minister told reporters that many of the problems highlighted by a recent, damning report into Ontario's long-term care sector are “long-standing issues” and said the government has already taken action to address some of the recommendations made in the report.

“The report makes it clear that the lessons learned from SARS were forgotten,” Fullerton said.

The Ontario Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission’s final report found the sector needs sweeping reforms to protect its vulnerable residents, pointing the finger at governments past and present for thousands of COVID-19 deaths at the province’s nursing homes.
