Twin explosions at a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) station in Crevedia, Romania killed at least one person and injured 57 others on Saturday.

Though the cause of the initial LPG explosion is unclear, it caused fire to spread toward two fuel tanks and a nearby home, triggering local authorities to evacuate residents within a 700-meter radius of the gas station.

The second blast occurred in the evening and left 26 firefighters injured. A majority of the victims were emergency service workers who intervened with the explosions, Romanian government officials confirmed.

At least four patients were set to be transferred to hospitals in Italy and Belgium on Saturday, with more transfers scheduled for Sunday, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said.

The fire at the LPG station and the surrounding area was contained by Sunday morning and the prosecutor general has taken over the investigation.
