Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that his country will be bolstering its military deployment in Latvia and reiterated Canada's commitment to defending NATO allies.

Trudeau was speaking to reporters at the conclusion of three-day NATO summit in Madrid, dominated by the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He also said Canada will increase efforts "to help the Ukrainians defend themselves" by sending new cameras for drones and war vehicles.

Trudeau said Canada is in the final stages of talks to supply Ukraine with up to 39 armoured combat support vehicles and six more Canadian-made drone cameras.

He says the decision was based on conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his government's ministers, who asked for these types of military equipment.

NATO leaders have closed a summit of the Western military alliance with a message to Moscow that the allies are prepared to "protect every inch of NATO territory" and fully back Ukraine in its battle against Russian forces.
