Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that there has been “no deep shift” in Canadian policy when it comes to NATO involvement in the Arctic, despite this week’s visit from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to the Canadian north.
Trudeau made the comments during a visit alongside Stoltenberg to 4 Wing Cold Lake air force base in Cold Lake, Alta.
Stoltenberg added that climate change is forcing the military alliance to “fundamentally transform its approach to security and defence” and that Canada “has an unrivalled understanding of this." He added that Canada’s presence in the Arctic is important for the entire alliance, especially amid increasing Russian aggression.
“We see a significant Russian military build-up with new bases, a new weapon system and also using the high north as a test bed for their most advanced weapons, including hypersonic missiles,” he explained.
On Thursday, the pair attended Operation Nanook, the country’s largest Arctic military training operation and toured a radar station in Nunavut.
