Trudeau questioned on report his office invited former Nazi to Zelenskyy reception

A new report in the Globe and Mail claims that an invite to Yaroslav Hunka, a former Nazi soldier, to a reception with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Canada last year came from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office. In the House of Commons Tuesday, Conservatives questioned the Liberal government about the invite.

Hunka did not accept the invite to the Toronto reception.

“The prime minister’s been claiming for months that he had no involvement in or knowledge of the invitation of a former Nazi soldier to the visit of the Ukrainian president. Now, we know he personally invited that same individual — he actually said the opposite — he said that the former speaker had to resign over doing the exact same thing. So will he hold himself to the very same standard and admit that he’s not fit for office,” the leader of the official opposition, Pierre Poilievre, asked Tuesday.

“The attacks that the leader of the opposition is choosing to make against the Ukrainian Canadian Congress demonstrates the extent to which this Conservative Party no longer stands with Ukraine,” Trudeau said in response.

Trudeau told reporters in September of last year the incident in which Hunka received a standing ovation in the House of Commons was “deeply embarrassing” to Parliament and all Canadians. House Speaker Anthony Rota resigned shortly after the details came to light.
