Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that his government will need “buy-in” from other political parties before moving forward on the issue of foreign interference in Canada.

He said the government was putting forward proposals on how to continue the work, but accused other parties of playing “terrible partisan and toxic games.”

Trudeau made the comments at a media availability alongside Karina Gould, minister of families, children and social development.

The prime minister also commented on the state of journalism in Canada amid reports that the Toronto Star’s owner had entered into merger talks with Postmedia.

Trudeau said he wouldn’t comment on the possible merger except to say that it would be “carefully looked at” by the Competition Bureau and others.

He said the government was focused on protecting local, quality journalism and expressed “disappointment” with social media companies like Meta that have pledged to end availability of news in Canada over opposition to the Online News Act.
