Leader of the official opposition Erin O’Toole started Thursday’s Question Period in the House of Commons with a pointed exchange with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland regarding the government’s policy towards China, in light of the 2-year anniversary of the detention of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig - AKA "The Two Michaels."

O’Toole questioned the Liberal government’s approach to joint military training exercises with the Chinese military, against the chief of the defence staff's recommendations and “Five Eyes” security concerns.

Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan confirmed later that Canada in fact has stopped those training programs.

The Conservative leader attacked the Chinese communist party’s record on human rights issues, particularly their treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority in detention camps and their controversial national security law on Hong Kong.

The deputy prime minister defended the government’s commitment to standing up for human rights, as well as pushing for the release of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
