Evacuees from the Spanish village of El Hoyo de Pinares returned to their homes on Friday after a week since they were evacuated, as smoke billowed from charred land on the outskirts of the village, and helicopters continued with their firefighting efforts.

Strong gusts of wind were the biggest obstacles for numerous teams of firefighters battling the fire on the ground and in the air.

"We secure the perimeter, the wind changes, you get some strong gusts spreading the ashes beyond the perimeter where we work, the fire starts again and you start again," the director of fire extinction Alejandro Penalvo said during the news conference.

Spain’s Tenerife Island suffered from a wildfire that burnt 500 hectares of land on Friday, with authorities expecting to get it under control during the day.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez blamed what he called characterized as a "climate emergency" for the intense heatwaves that are causing and fueling large wildfires across the country.

Firefighters continued battling wildfires in several Spanish regions on Friday, with the majority under control.
