Tens of thousands of people woke up to a foul stench in the air Sunday morning in parts of Metro Vancouver. It was an acrid smell, like burning plastic or creosote.

"We didn't know what it was. I said, it smells like tar out here and that was it. Nobody knew," one Burnaby resident said.

The Burnaby Fire Department says they've determined it was not a toxic release from the Parkland refinery.

While we now know where the odour came from, we still don't know what it was. Julia Foy reports.
