Providing an update on their investigation into multiple stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan in early September, Saskatchewan Assistant RCMP Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said Thursday that they now consider Damien Sanderson, brother of stabbing suspect Myles Sanderson, to be the victim of a homicide.

Blackmore also said the brothers were involved in at least three separate violent incidents prior to the stabbing spree that killed 11 people and injured 18 others.

“Evidence collected and analyzed by investigators to date have determined that Damien was involved in the initial planning and preparation for the attacks on Sept. 4,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore noted that the investigation was ongoing, and a lot of information was still being processed, but said Damien Sanderson, one of the suspects in the initial investigation, did not kill any of the victims himself.
