The Parole Board of Canada will review its decision to grant freedom earlier this year to Myles Sanderson, who is suspected of a deadly stabbing rampage in Saskatchewan.
Sanderson became the subject of a massive police manhunt after 11 people were killed and 18 injured on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Sask. Among the dead was Sanderson’s brother Damien, who was also wanted. Myles Sanderson was also injured, RCMP said.
Canada’s Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Tuesday he was “extremely concerned” with the parole board’s decision and that he’s received assurances from the board that there will be an investigation into its decision to free Myles Sanderson. The decision dated Feb. 1 found that Sanderson would “not present an undue risk” and freeing him would “contribute to the protection of society” by facilitating his reintegration.”
Sanderson’s parole records recount almost two decades of crime, as well as drug and alcohol abuse and association with gang members, pimps and drug dealers. Catherine Urquhart has the details.
