Pierre Poilievre promises to defeat Liberals, says Conservatives are "one party serving one country"

Pierre Poilievre was named the Conservative Party of Canada's new leader on Saturday night with a decisive 68 per cent of the total vote from members. He promised to move from the victory to win the next election against the Liberals.

"Tonight begins the journey to replace an old government that costs you more and delivers you less with a new government that puts you first, your paycheque, your retirement, your home, your country," Poilievre said.

Poilievre also spoke to those who voted for the four other candidates, saying he opened his arms to them saying "now, today, we are one party serving one country."

The long-time MP from the Ottawa area spoke about his plans for the party, saying he would tackle inflation, repeal anti-energy laws of the current government, remove the ArriveCAN app and end the remaining COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Poilievre becomes the fourth permanent leader of the party, after Stephen Harper, Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole.
