Officials ask Ontarians to celebrate Mother’s Day virtually to avoid fourth COVID-19 wave | FULL

Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe urged people to celebrate Mother’s Day virtually this weekend to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in the province.

“If Ontario is to end our third pandemic wave and avoid a fourth wave, we must continue to drive transmission down. This will require our continued commitment to those pubic health measures that we know work, so yes, this means that if you don’t live with your mother I’m sitting here once again asking Ontarians to celebrate Mother’s Day virtually this weekend.” She said.

The doctor pointed that Ontario has traditionally seen increase in COVID-19 cases after special holidays.

The province reported 3,424 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The provincial total now stands at 483,057.

The province announced Wednesday the 50-and-older age group, in addition to those with high-risk health conditions, and a number of employees who cannot work from home are now eligible to get the shot.

People aged 50 and older across Ontario are among a number of new groups who can book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment starting Thursday.
