Alberta premier Jason Kenney says health minister resigned amid COVID-19 fourth wave | FULL

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says former health minister Tyler Shandro resigned his position on Tuesday forcing a cabinet shuffle.

Shandro has faced multiple controversies over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, causing a lot of people to request the minister step down.

Kenney announced that Calgary-Varsity MLA Jason Copping would take over the portfolio while Shandro will move into labour and immigration which was Copping's old ministry.

During the province's COVID-19 update on Tuesday Copping stated that his was "deeply committed to helping steer the province through this current crisis and on to better days".

Kenney thanked Shandro for his time as health minister.

"Tyler's dedication to the job and to serving the people of Alberta has never been in question. He's one of the hardest working people I've ever known, and he has brought his heart to his job."

Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw also updated the province's COVID-19 situation. There were 1500 new cases identified in the previous 24 hours, with an additional 29 deaths recorded.

Alberta's hospital's continue to feel the pressure with 996 patients in their care, and 222 patients in intensive care with COVID-19.

Kenney also confirmed his government has reached out to the federal government to prepare for possible help in the fight against the COVID-19 fourth wave.
