Alberta Premier Jason Kenney reacted Wednesday to the announcement that U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order to revoke the permit that would allow the Keystone XL pipeline expansion project to continue, saying he was "deeply disturbed" and calling it an “insult directed at the United States’ most important ally and trading partner.”

The expansion was green-lit by former U.S. president Donald Trump in January of last year. However, Biden had long promised to rescind the presidential permit in keeping with his campaign promise to shift the U.S. from fossil fuels and towards clean energy.

Earlier on Wednesday, TC Energy Corp. suspended work on the Keystone XL project in anticipation of the permit being removed.

Kenney called on the Trudeau government to ask the Biden administration to discuss the decision “in the context of a way forward between Canada and the United States on environmental policy, climate policy and energy security.”
