Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced Monday his government would introduce a motion in the legislature officially requesting a halt to the federal carbon tax increase, which is scheduled to take place on April 1.

Kenney said inflation is at the highest point in decades in Canada and the increase will make life more expensive for everyone.

Kenney defended a meme on his social media account using an image of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, saying the assault image has taken over the internet and was used to make a point about green energy policies and moving away from using energy from so-called dictator nations like Russia.

The premier was joined by Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews, who said the increase would drive up the price of nearly everything; including essentials like groceries and gas.

The Alberta government announced a temporary halt of the provincial gas tax in response to rising gasoline prices on March 7.
