Speaking during question period on Thursday, Conservative MP Lianne Rood said that Canadian farmers “cannot afford to grow food,” while Conservative MP Dan Mazier said that the carbon pricing increase was “driving up” costs of gas, groceries and home heating.

Government house leader Steven MacKinnon responded by saying that “the vast majority” of fuels used by farmers are tax-exempt under the pollution pricing strategy, and that farmers “know more than anyone that climate change is a reality.”

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson also said that Conservatives had “collective amnesia” and that Conservative members ran in 2021 on “a promise to put in place carbon pollution.”

“The hypocrisy that comes from that side of the house is unbelievable,” Wilkinson concluded in his remarks.
