Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday defended his government’s policies on carbon pricing, suggesting that such a step is necessary to safeguard the quality of life of future generations.

“My job is not to be popular,” he said. “My job – although it helps – is to do the right things for Canada now and the right things for Canadians a generation from now.”

Trudeau made the comments while in Calgary to make an announcement on dental care, in which he said Canadians 70 years and older had already begun registering for the program.

Trudeau also addressed the crisis in Haiti, saying that Canada is working with Caribbean leaders to help find a Haitian-led solution to the crisis.

“The international community has been intervening for 30 years in Haiti and we are still finding ourselves in an impossible solution,” he said, explaining why it is necessary for Haitian political leaders to do the work to establish security.
