In our top story: After two-and-a-half long years, Canadians are fed up with the COVID-19 pandemic. But cases are still climbing nationwide and causing strain on the health-care system. And if there's one takeaway, while we may be done with the pandemic, it's not done with us. In the face of these rising numbers, the University of Toronto is hoping a new rapid test may be able to detect immunity to variants and determine how effective neutralizing antibodies are against the virus. Canada's premiers and territorial leaders concluded their two days of meetings on Tuesday in B.C., again calling on Ottawa to boost its share of healthcare funding from 22 per cent to 35 per cent to rebuild the ailing system. Canada's federal health minister says Ottawa wants accountability on any new cash given. But as Richard Zussman reports, B.C. Premier John Horgan says the federal government is fuelling a problem that doesn't exist.

In the U.S., the Jan. 6 committee continued its public hearings today, with a focus on the role former president Donald Trump played in assembling the mob that attacked the Capitol. Lawmakers say Trump refused to accept the election results and accused him of setting the stage for violence and then not acting to stop it once the chaos ensued.

Here in Canada, news from Rogers tonight that it will give customers affected by its massive network outage a credit equal to five days of service, as opposed to the two days previously offered. The news comes as the federal government promises big changes, with the industry minister demanding the big telecom companies put aside competition and work together when emergencies happen. But as Abigail Bimman reports, how that would work is another question.

Plus, extreme heat continues to hit regions in western Europe and the U.K. In Britain, an extreme heat warning is in effect, but the country's top officials are on the verge of declaring its first national heatwave emergency, as the temperatures soar and some people are at risk of illness or death. Redmond Shannon reports.
