Many Canadians are seeking air-conditioning this weekend as temperatures climb into the 30 degrees Celsius, prompting heat warnings for parts of AB, MB, SK and ON. In BC, the forest fire have been raging, destroying homes, with a number of evacuation orders now in place. Abigail Bimman takes a look at how Canadians are dealing with the first major heatwave of the summer and what we can expect for the rest of the summer.

As travel restrictions fall away, Canadians’ desire to travel has taken off. From April to June, Service Canada received more than 808,000 applications for passports. That surge has led to a massive backlog, with many Canadians wondering if they'll have their documents in time. Shallima Maharaj has the latest.

U.S. President Joe Biden has wrapped up his four-day visit to the Middle East, assuring the region's nations that America will stand by them as Russia wages war against Ukraine and China threatens Indo-Pacific security. The president held talks with leaders from several Mideast nations, and came away with a promise for more oil production as U.S. gas prices remain at a historic high. Jennifer Johnson has more.

Russian forces are keeping up their barrage of artillery and missile attacks, targeting civilian infrastructure in eastern Ukrainian cities. In the early days of the invasion, Russian soldiers were ordered to fire on civilians travelling on a roadway. But one woman who was shot at survived because some soldiers did not follow through with the order. In turn, she saved a Russian soldier's life when he got shot. Sean O'Shea reports.

Finally, the star-studded Calgary Stampede is wrapping up this weekend and by all accounts, it’s been a success. Crowds were close to pre-pandemic levels and even rising inflation didn’t put a damper on people’s spending. The Stampede has gone off without a hitch, except for another horse death that animal rights advocates are calling out. Tracy Nagi has more.
