Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Friday said that lockdowns had to be introduced in several regions across the province to prevent increasing COVID-19 cases from overburdening the health-care systems, adding that surgeries and procedures that were postponed in the first wave can’t be postponed again because, in many cases, they are life-saving.

The Ontario government announced Friday that starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, York Region would enter lockdown amid rising COVID-19 cases. Windsor-Essex is also moving to the lockdown zone on Monday.

The lockdown runs for a minimum of 28 days. The government will then reassess the situation and whether a region should move out of lockdown.

Hospitals across York Region have warned that their facilities have reached a “tipping point” due to a significant increase in COVID-19 admissions in recent weeks.
