Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday announced his government will be providing nearly $1 billion dollars in funding to build better broadband across the province.
This is part of the effort for Ontario's "long-term economic recovery" amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Ford, as access to high-speed Internet remains especially "important" during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The announcement was made alongside Finance Minister Rod Phillips, Laurie Scott, minister of infrastructure, and Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Treasury Board.
When asked about the province's new colour-coded COVID-19 control system and whether the threshold unveiled in the framework for areas to quality as red zones are set too high, the premier said the system is about "early detection" and "early prevention."
The press conference comes as Ontario reported 987 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 79,692. Wednesday’s case count is a decrease from Tuesday’s which saw 1,050 cases — a new single-day high ever recorded in Ontario. Active cases in Ontario now stand at 8,321.
