Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in speaking about how the government has responded to COVID-19 on Wednesday said that fighting the coronavirus “isn’t cheap,” citing things like medical equipment and testing. She said there’s an added, “even more expensive” cost by limiting social contact and in turn, limiting economic activity.
Freeland made the comments during a keynote address at the Toronto Global Forum Wednesday afternoon.
The deputy prime minister said it was normal for Canadians to be concerned about their nation’s finances, but said if the question is whether the country can afford COVID-19 spending, the answer is yes. She said they entered the pandemic with “fiscal firepower” to do what was needed and had lowest net debt to GDP ratio in the G7 and still expected to have the same status.
She added that the financial assistance provided for Canadians was to help give them a “bridge” to help as many as they can and that not helping them would be a “profound mistake.”
