Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw on Tuesday said that the province's COVID-19 case count and hospitalization numbers are higher now in February than they were before when the second wave began four months ago in October. The province has almost 5,000 active cases and more than 350 hospitalizations, compared to 2,890 cases and 122 hospitalizations on Oct. 17.
Hinshaw made the statement during a COVID-19 update.
Of the new cases reported Tuesday, Hinshaw said 50 were of the B.1.1.7 variant first identified in the U.K., but there has been no new spread of the N501Y.V2 variant, first found in South Africa.
Hinshaw said the province does not plan on easing the ban on indoor gatherings until Step 3 of the reopening plan because evidence shows those types of get-togethers have led to the highest rates of COVID-19 transmission.
