Canada byelections: Liberals come out ahead as Conservatives fail to expand support

In a quartet of Canadian federal byelections Monday – two in Manitoba, one in Ontario, and one in Quebec – the incumbent party held their own so the balance of power in the House of Commons is preserved.

Recent polls have shown the popularity of the federal Liberal party to be sagging, but in three of the four byelections, Liberal support improved and in some cases, quite dramatically.

The Conservatives held the two ridings that they started out with but did not expand their support. And even though polls have shown their support to be growing nationally, their support didn’t grow except in one riding.

Meanwhile, the NDP fell significantly back on their vote share from 2021 with votes seemingly falling to the Liberals.
