Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek provided an update on repairs to a critical water main break on Sunday, emphasizing the need for clear communication and support for residents and local businesses. She highlighted concerns about the timeline, information on a boil water advisory and the necessity of multilingual communication.
Gondek explained the difference between a water main and a feeder main and said, "A lot of people who have said water mains break all the time. They get fixed really quickly. This is the difference between a water main that's the size of a pizza versus a water main that you can drive a truck through. This feeder main is so big you could drive a truck through it."
She outlined the steps required to address the damage and commented, "It is a really big repair job because this piece of infrastructure is so big, and that feeder main is a major artery."
With the feeder main affecting 60 per cent of the city's water distribution system, Gondeck explained the risk of water shortages, comparing the reservoirs to tanks that, once emptied, cannot be refilled due to the broken feeder main. "That's why we could run out of water. That's why this situation is so critical," she added.
