Officials with the City of Calgary say repair work on a water main is entering a critical phase before it can be returned to service.

Work to restore the feeder main has reached a very important week with the installing of pipe and backfilling of excavations expected soon. Once that's done, crews can begin testing and returning the feeder main to full service.” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek during an update Monday afternoon.

“When the team is ready to add water to the pipe, it's going to be a staged easing of getting that pipe as well as the rest of the system back up to normal.” Gondek added.

Michael Thompson with the City of Calgary said they were entering a critical phase “as crews prepare to bring the pipe back into service, including the filling, flushing and testing to support the safe return to service.”

Thompson said crews need to take the appropriate steps to get water back into the pipe as there was a rapid depressurization when the original break happened and they need to monitor closely for any additional issues.

“Work is progressing, but we're not out of the woods yet” Thompson stated.

During her daily update earlier on Monday Gondek said that the broken main is on track to be repaired by July 5.
