City of Calgary officials provided an update Saturday on the work being done to repair a water main break that has forced residents to conserve water use. It's estimated that it may take up to a week to fully resolve the situation, according to the city's manager of drinking water distribution.

“If everything goes really well, we're looking at least another 5 to 7 days before the situation is resolved,” Chris Houston, the City of Calgary’s manager of drinking water distribution said.

"We just want Calgarians to be prepared and understand that it will still take some time to get this back in service," he added.

Nancy Mackay, director of water service, said the city had succeeded in reducing demand in the meantime to 484 million litres, “bringing our supply and demand to an even level.”

Mayor Jyoti Gondek emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, "We will run out of water if we don't take action individually right now. This is not a joke. It is not some conspiracy. It is a fact."
