The use of forceps and vacuum delivery tools during labour has resulted in an alarmingly high number of maternal traumas in Canada, such as perineal and cervical tears, a recent report has found.
Published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on Thursday, an analysis spearheaded by McMaster University revealed that Canada has the highest incidence of such maternal traumas among high-income nations.
Giulia Muraca, the paper’s lead author, says maternal traumas are happening at an “absurdly high, unacceptable rate” -- many stemming from the use of forceps and vacuum delivery tools.
Kat Ward has more on the troubling findings.
