As Canada grapples with its residential school trauma, advocates are also urging for a revamp of the country's child welfare system.
According to Canada's 2016 census, 52 per cent of children in foster care across the country were Indigenous. In Manitoba, they even made up 90 per cent of the province's 10,000 foster care kids.
There are concerns the system is just another extension of residential schools, given the disproportionate number of Indigenous kids in it, bringing new generations of trauma among them.
Heather Yourex-West spoke to two former Indigenous foster children on what they think needs to change.
