Several decades after the last residential school closed in this country, there are still thousands of Indigenous children in Canada’s child welfare system.
According to 2016 census data, while Indigenous children account for only 7.7 per cent of the child population, they account for 52.2 per cent of the children in foster care.
Advocates for First Nations children, say if the federal government is serious about reconciliation, the issue of Indigenous kids in care must be addressed. And as Heather Yourex-West reports, they hope voters will have Indigenous children in mind when they cast their vote.
