Global National: Feb. 9, 2024 | Supreme Court upholds Ottawa’s Indigenous child welfare law

The Supreme Court of Canada on Friday upheld the federal government’s 2019 law on Indigenous child welfare, in a landmark victory for Indigenous communities across the country. Bill C-92 affirms that First Nations, Métis, and Inuit have sole authority in protecting their children. As David Akin reports, the top court said the decision was necessary to advance reconciliation efforts.

Ontario has become the latest province to sign on for its share of a nearly $200-billion health-funding deal from the federal government. The money is meant to help ease the pressures Canada’s health-care system is facing amid staff shortages and major backlogs. But as Mackenzie Gray reports, critics say it won’t be enough to make impactful changes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to prepare an evacuation plan for the city of Rafah, ahead of an expanded ground offensive in Gaza. More than a million people are living in overcrowded conditions along the Egyptian border after fleeing Israeli airstrikes in the North. Crystal Goomansingh reports.

There has been a terrifying increase in extortion cases across Canada. An Ontario community has created a task force to deal with the problem and in Edmonton, Alta., there have been 34 cases of extortion, arson, or firearms offences since October. Heather Yourex-West reports.
