The mass killings in Saskatchewan earlier this month has drawn attention to what some are calling an epidemic of violence within Indigenous communities. Violence is known as a by-product of trauma — however the solution is more challenging.

Twice a week the warriors in this room smudge before going into battle... Fighting an all-too-familiar foe.

“I’m the first one in my family to not go to residential school. My grandmother, my mother. And I also want to be the first one in my family to stop these generational traumas and abuses,” one participant said.

This is a healing circle put on twice a week by the Warriors Against Violence society.

The support here isn't for victims of violence, but rather for the ones who offend. Heather Yourex-West explains.
