World leaders and officials reacted Monday after thousands of supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country's Congress, Supreme Court and the presidential palace on Sunday.

Brazil's own communications minister said that the riot was "more severe" than what happened in the U.S. on Jan. 6, 2021 because it was the legislative branch that was breached. He said an "invasion" took place in Brazil not only of Congress, but the seat of all branches of government.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres said that those who break the law "should suffer the corresponding consequences." German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit called the riot an "attack on democracy," saying the government took the images in "with horror."

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, speaking ahead of bilateral and trilateral meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden, said his country joins the other two in condemning what occurred Sunday.
