The storming of the Brazilian Congress and other government buildings on Sunday by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro has divided the opinions of local residents.

"People have the right to protest, but they shouldn't destroy buildings," plant vendor Cristina Rodrigues said in Rio de Janeiro.

A Brasilia resident, who preferred to withhold her name, said she believed the elections had been tampered with and called President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's leftist rival who defeated him after a narrow October election win, a thief.
