People in the Newfoundland and Labrador town that restored faith in humanity, following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, are filled with both pride and sorrow 20 years later.

A commemoration service on the 20th anniversary of the infamous 9/11 attacks took place in Gander, N.L., the small town in Canada that provided a helping hand to its southern neighbour in a time of crisis.

Nearly 7,000 passengers were stranded for three days in Gander when all flights were grounded after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and the people of Gander provided food, shelter and other assistance.

Now the so-called "plane people" who "came from away" on that fateful day are a part of the town's history - and a silver lining of brightness on an otherwise dark day.

The ceremony took place at the Steele Community Centre, with performances by local entertainers.
