Four members of the same family, three adults and a teenager, were killed when they were struck by a vehicle in London, Ont., on Sunday evening, Chief Steve Williams said on Monday. A child from the same family is in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.
Williams said the family was “targeted because of their Islamic faith.” He called the collision a “devastating loss” for the community.
Det. Supt. Paul Waight said a black pick-up truck mounted the sidewalk and struck the family members. He said the accused, 20-year-old London resident Nathanial Veltman, was arrested about a six-kilometre drive from the scene.
London Mayor Ed Holder called the act one of “mass murder,” saying many hearts are “broken” after Sunday’s incident.
