A 71-year-old Chicago-area landlord has been charged with first-degree murder and two hate crimes after police say he stabbed a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy to death and seriously injured his mother because of their Muslim faith amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The boy, Wadea Al Fayoumi, was stabbed 26 times, the Will County Sheriff's Office said. His mother, Hannan Shanin, had multiple stab wounds and is expected to survive the attack.

The suspect, Joseph Czuba, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of hate crime and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the sheriff's office said.
