World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Wednesday said that countries need to increase surveillance through testing and ensure more access to vaccines and antivirals to combat monkeypox as the virus continues to spread.

He also said he's concerned about sustained transmission as it could move into higher-risk groups, adding that some children have already been reported infected with the virus in some countries.

There have been more than 3,200 confirmed cases of monnkeypox and one death reported in the last six weeks from 48 countries where it does not usually spread, according to WHO.

Ghebreyesus also commented on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, saying that "safe abortion is health care." He said the agency's stance that "all women should have the right to choose when it comes to their bodies and health, full stop."

He added that limiting access can drive women to unsafe abortions, which could lead to death.
