WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that member states have agreed to draft a pandemic accord.
The agreement will cover pandemic prevention, preparedness and response and will help foster cooperation between countries, he said.
A negotiating body will be established to draft the agreement, with its first meeting occurring in March 2022.
Tedros also spoke out against countries that have levelled travel bans against South Africa and Botswana over fears about the Omicron COVID-19 variant, calling the situation “deeply concerning.”
He said the bans punish those countries for “doing the right thing” and do not prevent the spread of the virus.
