U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden visited a vaccination clinic in the nation's capital on Tuesday. The trip was meant to highlight the authorization of vaccines for kids under five years of age.
Afterward, Biden spoke from the White House, calling it a "very historic milestone."
The president said it is "a monumental step forward," adding that "the United States is now the first country in the world to offer safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as six months old. For the first time in this pandemic, every American can now have access to life-saving vaccines."
Advisers to the CDC unanimously decided last week that COVID-19 vaccines should be open to children as young as six months, with the final sign-off coming from the agency's director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
Roughly 18 million kids will be eligible for the shot in the U.S., but it's still unclear how many will get the vaccines. Less than a third of children aged 5 to 11 have done so since vaccinations opened to them last November.
The vaccines will begin to roll out this week.
