Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., questions Michael E. Horowitz, Inspector General of the Department of Justice and FBI Director Chris Wray during the Senate Judiciary Committee Sept. 15 as lawmakers examined if the FBI mishandled its investigation of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted in 2018 of sexually abusing women and young female athletes in his care. Ossoff asked about accountability for an FBI agent who had conversations about a job prospect with the U.S. Olympic Committee. Horowitz said it is unclear if this is criminally in the DOJ’s jurisdiction because the agent retired before he could be formally investigated and had these conversations with Steve Penny, who was president of USA Gymnastics at the time, and not the committee.
