McKayla Maroney, a member of the 2012 Women’s Olympic gymnastics team, gave opening statements Sept. 15 before the Senate Judiciary Committee as lawmakers examined if the FBI mishandled its investigation of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. He was convicted in 2018 of sexually abusing women and young female athletes in his care. Maroney said individuals in the FBI are responsible for the continued protection of Nassar. “To not indict these agents is a disservice to me, my teammates. It is a disservice to the system which was built to protect all of us from abuse. It is a disservice to every victim who suffered needlessly at the hands of Larry Nassar after I spoke up. Why are public servants whose job is to protect getting away with this?”
