Streets in and around Marseille, France were flooded Wednesday, with streams of water running down roads in the port city and lightning strikes flickering in the night sky, as thunderstorms battered several parts of southern France.

An estimated 35 millimeters of rain fell on the city in less than 45 minutes on Wednesday night, according to weather service Meteo France. In total, the city received the equivalent of six months of regular rainfall within 24 hours, La Chaine Meteo weather channel said.

The flooding in Marseille comes as part of an abrupt stormy episode after a string summer heat waves in France.

Plus, on Thursday, at least five people died on the French island of Corsica as a violent storm unleashed swirling, hurricane-force winds and left 45,000 households without electricity.
