The second of back-to-back atmospheric rivers is slowly churning across the U.S. state of California, flooding roads and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people.
Forecasted with heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds, the latest storm began Sunday in central California — pummeling the Santa Barbara region along the way — and is slowly making its way south towards Los Angeles County. The adverse conditions are expected to last until Tuesday.
“This is a bit of an unusual storm,” Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California said in a livestream on Sunday.
In preparation for potential life-threatening floods, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties have issued evacuation orders for some residents.
