Turkey has praised the actions of two men of Turkish descent who say they helped save a police officer and two women during a deadly shooting in Vienna on Monday night, calling their actions heroic.

Mikail Özen, a personal trainer and mixed martial arts fighter, and his friend Recep Tayyip Gultekin said the two police officers, who threw themselves onto an injured officer to protect him, urged them to stay back for their own safety, but they instead helped carry the injured officer to an ambulance.

The men's actions drew praise from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, whose country's relations with Austria have been strained in recent years. The men also received a FaceTime call from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, saying he was proud of them and to continue to help Austrians.

Austria's government has described the shooting as an Islamist terrorist attack in which four people were killed.
