Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has loosened gun laws in the state and who has antagonized civil rights leaders by deriding “wokeness," was loudly booed as he addressed a vigil mourning the racist killing of three Black people in Jacksonville over the weekend.

Hundreds of people gathered Sunday at prayer vigils and in church to mourn yet another racially-motivated attack in America: Three Black people in Florida were killed at the hands of a white, 21-year-old man who authorities say left behind white supremacist ramblings that read like “the diary of a madman.”

DeSantis said that on Monday the state would be announcing financial support for security at Edward Waters University, the historically black college near where the shooting occurred, and to help the affected families. He called the gunman a “major league scumbag.”

"We are going stand up and do what we need to do to make sure that evil does not triumph in the state of Florida," he said.
