Former U.S. vice-president Joe Biden spoke to the American people on Friday as he inches closer to the presidency, saying that U.S. voters have given him and his running mate Kamala Harris “a mandate” and they have “made it clear” they want the country to pull together.

The Democratic presidential hopeful said he and Harris have already met with public health experts in anticipation of being declared the winners in the presidential race. He appealed to voters who have suffered through the novel coronavirus pandemic, telling Americans that he “knows something about what it feels like to lose someone.”

Biden's first wife and daughter were killed in a car crash in 1972. His two sons were badly injured, but not killed.

He urged Americans to remain “calm” as they wait for votes to be counted and said while “strong disagreements are healthy,” the country needs to come together and heal after a divisive election.
