Despite incomplete results from several battleground states that can and likely will determine the outcome of the U.S. presidential race, President Donald Trump early on Wednesday prematurely and incorrectly claimed victory over Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

"Frankly, we did win," Trump told supporters at the White House, despite trailing Biden in the electoral college vote total at the time he made the remarks.

Election results from some battleground states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Georgia, were still not clear and projections from major networks and Edison Research showed Trump still short of the 270 electoral votes need to win re-election.

Trump also referred to the brewing legal fight in Pennsylvania over the counting of absentee ballots, calling it "a fraud on the American public" without providing any evidence to support this claim. Election laws in all U.S. states require all votes to be counted, and more votes still stood to be counted as people voted early by mail and in person in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
