The US Congress has certified Joe Biden as the winner of November's presidential election - after a day of chaos and violence in Washington. The session was forced into emergency recess when a violent mob of President Trump's supporters forced their way into the Capitol building to try and stop lawmakers from certifying the vote. Congress reconvened later for proceedings that went late into the night - and saw several Republican lawmakers abandoning their planned objections to the election result.
The unprecedented scenes unfolded after Trump had urged his supporters to rally at the Capitol as lawmakers debated the results. After Biden's victory was certified, Trump released this statement.
Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.
I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!
